It’s the beginning of spooky season and we thought we’d share some of our favourite tv shows and movies that get you into the mood for Halloween and all things horror.

IT (Chapters 1 and 2)

Seven helpless and bullied children are forced to face their worst nightmares when Pennywise, a shape-shifting clown, reappears. The clown, an ancient evil torments children before feeding on them.

Would You Rather

Iris and seven other desperate people become trapped in Shepard’s mansion. Shepard forces them to play a sadistic game for a large sum of money — but the dilemmas become increasingly deadly.

Twitches (Twitches Too)

Reunited on their 21st birthday, twin sisters use their magic powers to save their kingdom from the forces of darkness.

The Living and the Dead

Set in Somerset, England, in the year 1894, the story follows Nathan and Charlotte Appleby as they stand to inherit the family estate when Nathan’s mother passes away. They decide to move into the old house and begin a new life together on the farm, but not everything is as it seems. Isolated in the English countryside, the pair encounters some menacing paranormal phenomena that threaten to tear their marriage apart.

The Enfield Haunting

This three-part drama is based on real-life events that took place in an ordinary North London home in 1977. During the autumn of that year, novice paranormal researcher Maurice Grosse hears of a family reported to be terrorised by supernatural forces. After the recent death of his own daughter, Maurice gets drawn into the family’s story, which also involves a young girl at the centre of the bizarre happenings. The researcher enlists the help of experienced investigator Guy Lyon Playfair, who at first believes the case to be a scam – that is, until he comes into contact with the malevolent presence himself.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Evil Judge Turpin lusts for the beautiful wife of a London barber and transports him to Australia for a crime he did not commit. Returning after 15 years and calling himself Sweeney Todd, the now-mad man vows revenge, applying his razor to unlucky customers and shuttling the bodies down to Mrs. Lovett, who uses them in her meat-pie shop. Though many fall to his blade, he will not be satisfied until he slits Turpin’s throat.

Requiem

Matilda Gray, an ambitious musician and talented cellist, has her life suddenly turned upside down when her mother commits suicide. While going through her deceased mom’s possessions, Gray finds an old box filled with newspaper cuttings about the disappearance of a young girl from a small Welsh village more than 20 years ago. With her trusted friend Hal by her side, Gray travels to Wales to see if the case of the missing girl and her own mother’s death are in any way related. What Gray finds out, however, leads her to question her own identity.

Practical Magic

Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian’s vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov — and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.

Misery

After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes, who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favourite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.

Locke and Key

Following their father’s murder, three siblings move into a house filled with reality-bending keys.

Hocus Pocus

After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani and their new friend, Allison. After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

The Haunting of Hill House

This modern reimagining of the Shirley Jackson novel follows siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, they are forced back together in the face of tragedy and must finally confront the ghosts of their past. Some of those ghosts still lurk in their minds, while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.

Halloweentown (1,2,3 and Halloweentown High)

When Grandma Aggie comes visiting, the Piper children notice her use magic. Curious, they follow her back to Halloweentown where Aggie and their mother Gwen are attacked by the dark forces.

Goosebumps

Upset about moving from the big city to a small town, young Zach Cooper finds a silver lining when he meets his beautiful neighbour Hannah. The teen is surprised to learn that Hannah’s mysterious father is R.L. Stine, the famous author of the best-selling “Goosebumps” series. When Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters from the fantastic tales, it’s up to Stine, his daughter and Cooper to return the beasts back to the books where they belong.

Gerald’s Game

A woman accidentally kills her husband during foreplay. They had driven out to a remote area in an attempt to reignite their flailing relationship. Handcuffed to the bed, she soon becomes delirious.

Death Becomes Her

When a novelist loses her man to a movie star and former friend, she winds up in a psychiatric hospital. Years later, she returns home to confront the now-married couple, looking radiant. Her ex-husband’s new wife wants to know her secret, and discovers that she has been taking a mysterious drug which grants eternal life to the person who drinks it. The actress follows suit, but discovers that immortality has a price.

Crimson Peak

After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young Edith finds herself swept away to his remote gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille, Thomas’ alluring sister and protector of her family’s dark secrets. Able to communicate with the dead, Edith tries to decipher the mystery behind the ghostly visions that haunt her new home. As she comes closer to the truth, Edith may learn that true monsters are made of flesh and blood

The Haunting of Bly Manor

A young governess arrives at Bly Manor and begins to see apparitions haunting the estate.

Beetlejuice

After Barbara and Adam Maitland die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes and teen daughter Lydia buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice, a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.

The Addams Family (any of them)

Members of the mysterious and spooky Addams family — Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday, Uncle Fester and Grandma — are readily preparing for a visit from their even creepier relatives. But trouble soon arises when shady TV personality Margaux Needler realizes that the Addams’ eerie hilltop mansion is standing in the way of her dream to sell all the houses in the neighbourhood.
