Spies In Disguise

To welcome in 2020, we decided to go to the cinema and watch Spies In Disguise. As fans of Tom Holland, we’ve known about this film since it was first announced. We have quite a wide taste when it comes to movies, but it seemed like something that was our cup of tea.

Going into the film, based on the trailers we had seen, we thought this film would be very Will Smith-centric, however, we were surprised by how little we learnt about his character, Lance Sterling, in comparison to Tom Holland’s character, Walter Beckett. These two characters were a brilliantly hilarious duo and bounced off each other scene after scene.

Sometimes, children’s films try to avoid the formulaic plot and get it wrong, whereas, Spies In Disguise knew what their plot was going to be and executed that formula well. The film gave us everything we hoped for and we weren’t disappointed in the slightest. The unpredictability of the film was left to the humour rather than the plot.

We went to a screening filled with young children and their parents. We were the only two of our generation in the cinema. Normally, this affects how funny we expect the film to be. Whilst, Spies In Disguise was a family film with humour for the kids, there was a lot in it for adults too. It was cleverly written to include the parents in multi-layer jokes. There was the initial, silly humour for the kids but a more suggested humour for the older viewer. The older humour wasn’t explicit but it was implied for those that could understand it. One dad in our screening laughed more than any of the children.

It was a fun-filled, easy watch and different from the blockbuster movies that we usually go see at the cinema together (think Marvel movies). We had a lot of fun and it was nice to see something that wasn’t extremely long.

We’ll never be able to look at pigeons the same way again.
