The Light Between Oceans ~ M. L. Stedman

The Light Between Oceans by M. L.  Stedman has been on my kindle for as long as I can remember. In order to finish off my mini goals for the year I needed to to read a book set in the 1920s and thought this would be the perfect chance to finally get round to reading it.

We follow war stricken Tom Sherbourne and his wife Isabel as they come to terms with their new life on the isolated Janus Rock where Tom is now the new lighthouse keeper. Over half a days journey from the coast of Australia they have suffered heartache after heartache trying to start their own family. A few years later a boat washes up on Janus with a dead man and a living baby on board. Tom and Isabel go against their morals but will their choices devastate their future together.

Although the book was quite slow paced it was full of so much emotion that generally made my heart hurt. I could see why they ultimately made the decision they did but also understood why Tom then made the devastating choices that followed. Not many books make me feel so full of emotions but I definitely shed a few tears by the end of the book. I loved that due to how isolated the main location was we didn’t see very many characters which Stedman really utilised and showed us so many layers within both Tom and Isabel.

Overall, I gave The Light Between Us a 4⭐️ rating and for a debut novel I think it was pretty amazing. I am intrigued to read whatever Stedman releases next.
