A Winter’s Promise ~ Christelle Dabos

A Winter’s Promise is the first book in The Mirror Visitor Series. Ophelia doesn’t care much about appearances and is much more interested in running her museum. As an Animist, she can read the history of objects by just touching them with her bare hands, she can also travel through mirrors. And then she is betrothed to a stranger from another clan. Ophelia leaves everything she knows behind to go to her new home in a cold and icy land where the people are just as frosty as their environment.

This book was my Christmas present from Millie and she excelled. This book was very much my cup of tea and the more I read, the more I found things that I love in a story. I had so much fun reading this book and was genuinely a little sad when I finished it and couldn’t start the sequel immediately.

The characters in this novel were very interesting. Ophelia first appears to be a little bit of a mouse. She’s quiet, prefers to hide away in her museum and is clumsy. Over the course of the story, she remains that quiet character but finds her voice and inner strength. It’s an interesting character development that I know is just going to improve over the next three books. Thorn, Ophelia’s fiance is inscrutable, just like his aunt Berenilde. I love finishing a chapter and having completely changed my mind about their trustworthiness.

The imagery that Christelle Dabos writes is beautiful and I really wish I knew enough French to be able to read this book in its original language because I have a feeling that the original words would take the imagery to a whole other level.

I adored this book and it’s easily become my first five-star read of the year.
