The Sisters of Alameda Street ~ Lorena Hughes

The Sisters of Alameda Street by Lorena Hughes has been on my kindle for far too long. The blurb intrigued me straight away as it is full of family secrets and deceit alongside the setting of 1940s-60s Ecuador, a setting I had never read in a book before. Described as a generational saga that mixes both historical fiction and romance with a Latin soap opera vibe. My mind was instantly drawn to one of my favourite shows Janes the Virgin and let just say this book did not disappoint.

We follow Malena struggling with the aftermath of her father’s sudden suicide. Whilst sorting through his possessions she finds a letter signed only with an ‘A’ that reveals her mother is still alive living in a quaint little town called San Isidro. Malena is so intent to find her mother but only faces even more question when she arrives at the Platas family home to find 4 sisters that couldn’t be any more different. Although they all share one thing in common, their names all begin with ‘A’. As she learns more about Amanda, Ana, Abigail and Alejandra, Malena’s confusion only grows. Whilst following a young woman’s search for the truth Malena’s quest threatens to unravel a family’s past full of long-buried secrets.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book cover to cover. The way Hughes weaved the past and present throughout the entire story was effortless. I loved learning about all the sisters especially when it flashed past to them growing up and the secrets they have had to keep for so long. The new setting for me of Ecuador was also very refreshing with the book having a healthy blend of both culture and history. The twists and turns along the way continued to shock me until the very end when Malena finally gets all the answers she has desired.

I gave The Sisters of Alameda Street a 4⭐️ review as I was still left with a few unanswered question at the end.
