The Thursday Murder Club ~ Richard Osman

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman was another present from my other half for Christmas. He knows just how much I love Richard Osman, especially his show House of Games, so knew he had to purchase his debut novel for me. Going into this read I had quite high expectations that it was going to be great. The genre and storyline were 100% the types of book I love to read. This was made even better by the fact it was written by Osman himself, for such an intelligent man, I just had an inkling that this was going to be an awesome book.

This book follows a group of elderly people who live together in a peaceful retirement village called Cooper’s Chase. Although they are old in age they are far from it in spirit. Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim and newcomer Joyce all meet on a Thursday to discuss old cold cases and murders. The meetings are rather jovial until the awesome foursome are thrust into a real-time murder inquiry, working alongside the police to catch the culprit. Along the way, we learn of their past lives and of those they live with. Secrets buried for decades are brought to the surface and many have to face their darkest fears.

Hand on heart this book ticks every book for me. It was such a cosy murder mystery to curl up and read but at the same time it delved into the darkness caused when people keep secrets. Honestly, this is one of the best murder mysteries I have read in a long time and let me tell you I have read a fair few. I was worried it would be like any other murder mystery I had read before but honestly, it was so much more. I actually became very attached to the characters and the stories they told. The way Osman managed to weave so many side plots into and around the main investigation was effortless, every chapter flowing seamlessly into the next.

I could probably write a million more words on why I loved this book so much but I feel like I’ve probably gushed enough. The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman gets my first 5⭐️ review of the year and I am beyond excited for the next instalment of the story to come out in September.
