The Love Hypothesis ~ Ali Hazelwood

The Love Hypothesis is a cheesy romance book that is hugely popular on booktok. Third-year PhD. candidate Olive Smith is determined to get her best friend, Anh, the happy ending she deserves, the problem is that Anh doesn’t believe that Olive is fully over her ex – the guy Anh is crushing on. To prove her friend wrong, Olive kisses the first man she sees, the mean, unapproachable professor. It spirals and Olive and Dr Carlsen are forced to keep up the pretence.

Usually, this is the type of book that I would actively avoid. Cheesy romances are not my cup of tea, I don’t like them as films, tv shows or books. I’m much more of an action/adventure girl. However, I really enjoyed this and I hated how much I enjoyed it. I think Tiktok is on to something with the Love Hypothesis.

The fake dating storyline is fun and I liked how Olive was aware of the trope and the other tropes that tend to go hand in hand with fake dating (only one bed etc.). There was a lightness to the plot and it was a very easy read. Ali Hazelwood used that lightness and humour to begin the discussion on some important topics without it seeming out of place.

Overall, it was a nice change to read something quick and lighthearted that was an adult book rather than middle-grade. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood gets three and a half stars.
