April Reviews

Okay, I lied, writing monthly reviews is so much better when you’ve got no motivation. In April, uni and work picked up quite a bit, so my reading and reviewing slowed, despite my best intentions. So, here is what I read in April:

The Society for Soulless Girls  by Laura Steven

I really enjoyed this book. It was a spur-of-the-moment purchase as I awaited a train home from London. It was a strange book to read as it read like a mystery/thriller book where I was waiting for the following details in the case, but I was also very aware that it was a supernatural novel. It didn’t quite work fluidly but it was an absorbing read that I genuinely enjoyed. I gave it three and three-quarter stars.

Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong

I adored Chloe Gong’s other two books and have been waiting to read this since it was announced. It did not disappoint. I did like how it included the two sides of the story from each of the sisters’ points of view. Rosalind and Orion’s relationship was fascinating to read and I really enjoyed the slow journey they took to trust each other. I can’t wait to read the follow-up book. I gave Foul Lady Fortune four and a half stars.

The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin

This was a heavy read. I read it for university and it was difficult. I tried and dnf’ed this book back in the summer of last year. On the second attempt, it was a bit easier and I managed to grasp the plot. Shevek, the protagonist, is a physicist and his theories and his life work very much went over my head. Combined with the politics included it took me forever to read this book. However, I did rate it three stars.

Last Violent Call by Chloe Gong

This was one hundred per cent an impulse read after spotting it in the library and was easily my favourite read of April. Last Violent Call features two short stories, the first featuring Juliette and Roma and the second featuring Benedikt and Marshall. I loved the second story as it was very Agatha Christie/Murder on the Orient Express inspired and was a very fun read. Overall, I gave this book four and a half stars.
