The Missing of Clairdelune ~ Christelle Dabos

The Missing of Clairdelune is the second book in the Mirror Visitor series by Christelle Dabos. Ophelia is promoted to Vice-Storyteller by Farouk, the ancestral spirit of the Pole. She finds herself having to perform for Farouk and his favourites multiple times, something she is not familiar with. Everyone in the Pole knows that Ophelia can read objects and so, she is approached to try and figure out what happened to those that are going missing from the Pole’s most secure place, Clairdelune.

The first book in the series was my favourite book of January and I was determined to get hold of the next books. The Missing of Clairdeline was a brilliant follow-up to A Winter’s Promise. We pick up not long after the end of the first book and the relationship between Ophelia and her fiance is strained. With Thorn, he has an interesting character arc, it’s more of a wavy line, to be honest, he becomes more likeable, then immediately he’ll do something that makes you annoyed with him. However, he’s not a character that you outrightly hate. Ophelia’s character reacts to Thorns and so her character arc kind of mirrors his and it’s an interesting dynamic.

The plot was a lot heavier and more complex than the first book and it worked perfectly with the fantastical setting. The politics and the religion of the world are what is called into question in this story and at some parts, this can get a little heavy, but really makes you think about how religion in our world is portrayed and thought of.

I really enjoyed this book and raced through it. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first novel but that was mostly because it was heavy in places and I always read before bed. I give The Missing of Clairdelune four and a half stars and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
