I’m Glad My Mom Died ~ Jennette McCurdy

I grew up with the generation of Nickelodeon kids watching shows such as Drake and Josh, Victorious and iCarly. iCarly was a firm favourite of mine and is a show I have even re-watched as an adult. So when I saw that Jennette, who played the character of Sam Puckett on the show, was releasing a memoir about her childhood as a child actor I was instantly intrigued.

In this both heartbreaking and hilarious memoir, McCurdy very candidly opens up about being thrust into fame from a very young age and the struggles she has dealt with since then. She also focuses on the very turbulent relationship she had with her overbearing mother growing up, who has since died from cancer, and how she managed to retake the reigns of her own life.

From start to finish I felt like my jaw was permanently on the floor. McCurdy speaks openly about her struggles with eating disorders and addiction as well as how her own mother taught her how to calorie restrict from a young age. Since quitting acting and finding therapy she has finally embarked on her journey towards recovery and is making her own decision about where her life will take her. This book was a real eye-opener and truly shows how much some people can be hiding. I loved every single page, McCurdy’s honest and off-the-cuff writing style was addictive and I just could not put this book down.

I gave I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy a completely deserved 5 ⭐️ rating. I would definitely recommend looking at the trigger warnings for this book before reading it if any of the topics I’ve mentioned are triggering for you.
