Her Majesty’s Royal Coven ~ Juno Dawson

Having read quite a few of her books in the past, I was intrigued to read Dawson’s new novel, Her Majesty’s Royal Coven. From the descriptions I had read of this prior to reading it, I felt it was going to be right up my street. Unfortunately, it then fell short of my maybe too-high expectations.

We follow the HRMC, a secret coven who walks among us. They protect crown and country but soon realise that their biggest battle will come from within. Whispers of a prophecy soon start to spread that will bring the Coven to its knees. Five old friends will have to band together at the centre of it all. Life as a modern witch is far from easy especially when you’re fighting for something not everyone believes in.

The concept of this book could have been amazing but I found it very hard to read. I had no motivation to keep picking it up. I even read the entirety of another book before I finished this which I never normally do. Dawson covers some very important themes throughout but I felt like the writing was just so cliche and if I’m honest a bit boring at times. For a book with such an important message, it just didn’t pack the punch I thought it would. Although only a small group of main characters I spent most of the book not having a clue who was who. Other than their names I felt like all the characters were the same and it made it very hard to keep up with what was happening most of the time.

Overall, I felt like for a book that took me the majority of the month to finish I was not left with any overwhelming feelings towards it. It felt like a very long read where not much happened. I gave Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson a 2.5 ⭐️ rating.
