One Christmas Wish ~ Katherine Rundell

Over the last six months, I have read a lot of children’s picture books from books aimed at pre-school children to illustrated YA novels. However, there is nothing better than a Christmas picture book. I’ve read about ten in the last few weeks before deciding which ones I wanted to buy for me. It took me forever, but I narrowed it down to two and One Christmas Wish by Katherine Rundell is the first of those two picks.

One Christmas Wish is slightly longer than your average picture book and features beautiful illustrations by Emily Sutton. It tells the story of Theo who is left home alone on Christmas Eve with the babysitter. He sees a weird-looking shooting star out the window and makes a wish to not be alone. Moments later, the Christmas tree decorations come to life.

The story that follows is heartwarmingly festive and feels like the spirit of Christmas wrapped up in a sixty-ish page book. Like a lot of people, I have not been feeling all that excited for Christmas, but this book has definitely started to get me into the Christmas spirit.

Emily Sutton’s illustrations are beautiful. They somehow manage to encompass all those childhood Christmas books and decorations that are family traditions. It might be just because they are illustrations of Christmas scenes, but they feel like they have been drawn with a little bit of Christmas magic.

This was a wonderful, magical Christmas book that can’t fail to warm your heart just in time for Christmas. I give it four stars.
