The Last Wife ~ Karen Hamilton

This book, on paper, is definitely my cup of tea. I had high hopes from both the cover and the blurb that I would love this book. But unfortunately, it just was a bit meh. I hate it when this happens, especially when it has so much potential to be a new firm favourite.

The Last Wife by Karen Hamilton is held together by the promise made between two women. A dying wish. Whilst Nina is dealing with her terminal diagnosis her best friend Marie is reeling from the promise she has made to her dying friend. Friends since childhood, Nina asks Marie to fulfil her final wishes for her after she has gone. What Nina doesn’t know is that Marie has forever longed for her ‘perfect’ life and was she the right person to have trusted with her last wishes. Swooping into save the family left behind Marie soon become a permanent fixture. But as she begins to live her new life she realises that Nina wasn’t who she thought she was and the secrets unturned will be truly explosive.

So, anyone who knows me the description above would be my go-to read. A book I would read to get me out of a slump. A book I could devour in one sitting. But it honestly just fell flat. For the entirety of the book, the suspense was slowly but surely growing. But by the time I got to the last few chapters and expected an explosive climax it just did not happen and the ending left me wanting so much more.

Although I felt the plot was a bit tiresome at points and I wanted much more action the one thing I did enjoy was the psychological side of the book. I think this is what kept me reading and wanting to know more. It felt like it was messing with your own mind a little and that you couldn’t even trust what you were reading was true.

The Last Wife definitely was not what I expected and overall I gave it a 2.5⭐️ rating.
