Six of Crows ~ Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is the first book in a duology of the same name. In bustling Ketterdam, Kaz Brekker is a criminal prodigy. He’s approached with the opportunity to pull off the heist of a lifetime. He puts together a team, promising to make them all rich beyond their wildest dreams. In this team, is a convict with a desire for revenge, a sharpshooter addicted to gambling, a boy who’s run away from privilege, a spy known as the Wraith, a Heartrender using her powers to survive and Kaz, a thief with a penchant for unlikely escapes.

I read this book because of a chat on discord. I was hesitant as I didn’t think Shadow and Bone was all that great, especially in comparison to Ninth House. I started the book a little confused about how the Grishaverse fit together as I knew Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows were all in the same universe and as I’ve read so little, I still finished the book confused. I enjoyed  Six of Crows more than Shadow and Bone.

I liked most of the characters and I think six members of the heist crew is the perfect number, however, I did feel like some of them weren’t that memorable. Sitting here, a week and a bit on from finishing the book, I can’t remember one of their names. It didn’t help that the story is told from multiple perspectives, jumping between the six characters and occasionally other characters and it was a little too much, especially when just starting the novel.

I wasn’t going to read the sequel, Crooked Kingdom, for a little while yet, however, Six of Crows ends on such a cliffhanger that I refused to pass up the opportunity to read the next one when it appeared on the shelf at my local library. The cliffhanger really changed the book for me, I think it made my rating jump up by at least half a star.

Overall, I’m curious to see how the story continues although, I don’t think this is particularly the book universe for me. I gave Six of Crows four stars.
