Dalgona Candy

Like the rest of the world, we’ve been watching Squid Game and seeing everyone on Tiktok recreate the Dalgona candy game, so we thought we’d give it a go ourselves. Conveniently, this ties in with our continental challenge, as we are currently on the Asian part of our bookish world tour.

Dalgona candy is a South Korean street food that was popular in the seventies and eighties. It is a relatively simple recipe but extremely easy to burn.

Warning: melted sugar is extremely hot and sticky and so be careful when cooking with it.

Ingredients:

– 1 1/2 Tbsp Sugar

– Pinch of Bicarbonate of Soda

  1. In a small pan place your sugar and heat on a low heat, stirring occassionally until the sugar begins to melt.

2. As soon as the sugar is mostly melted, remove from the heat and continue stirring. Add your pinch of bicarbonate of soda and stir vigorously.

3. Pour the mixture onto baking parchment and press flat. This may take a little experimenting as depending on the temperature of your kitchen and whatever you’re using to press, the sugar may set faster than you want.

4. Using a shaped cutter, gently press into the candy, don’t cut all the way through.

And that is all you need to make your very own Dalgona candy!
