Accused of the deaths of 2 husbands, several family members and 2 known associates.

Poisoned victims with arsenic. 

WHY

The motive for the killings was financial gain, it is said that she gained $15,000 from the deaths.

NOW

During the trial, jurors felt there was not enough evidence and whilst awaiting a new trial she was released on bail to her failing health. In 1915, Vermilya was acquitted of all her crimes and lived a quiet undocumented life until her passing.
