Antigone ~ Sophocles

Antigone is not something I would choose to read, however (and I know I’ve left it a little late) I’m studying it this week. So far in my course, whenever we do anything about the Greeks, it seems to be philosophy based and I really don’t like philosophy, so I was a little wary about not understanding the real messages of the play. However, it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.

Antigone is not a long play, only fifty-five pages. Unfortunately, every character seems to speak for a page and a half at a time, which is a little bit irritating. Antigone, the character, was the type of character that I root for and the translation made her feel like something a modern author would write, which I loved. King Creon irritated me to no end, but he’s a powerful man who won’t listen to reason, so it’s completely expected.

I can’t exactly write a huge amount about such a short play, but some of the imagery described by Tiresias was very vivid. I also read it in one day which means I probably didn’t take as much of it in as I probably should’ve. The main problem I have with plays is that even when I’m reading, I’m very conscious of the fact that it isn’t meant to be read, it’s meant to be performed.

Overall, I still enjoyed the plot, but I’m looking forward to being able to watch the play later this week.
