Mystery Book Box

In a moment of madness, we decided that we wanted to buy a mystery book box. So, we searched and ordered a box of five books, each a different genre from dontjudgebooks.co.uk

We received a romance book, a crime book, a bestseller, a debut novel and a book that had been adapted into a movie. They were all wrapped beautifully and opening them felt like Christmas!

Romance: The UnHoneymooners by Christina Lauren

Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion . . . she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas.

Our Thoughts: This is on both of our TBRs and we’ve nearly bought it, so we’re excited to read this one.

Crime: Th1rt3en by Steve Cavanagh

The serial killer isn’t on trial.
He’s on the jury…

They were Hollywood’s hottest power couple. They had the world at their feet. Now one of them is dead and Hollywood star Robert Solomon is charged with the brutal murder of his beautiful wife. This is the celebrity murder trial of the century and the defence want one man on their team: con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn. All the evidence points to Robert’s guilt, but as the trial begins a series of sinister incidents in the courtroom start to raise doubts in Eddie’s mind.

What if there’s more than one actor in the courtroom?

What if the killer isn’t on trial? What if the killer is on the jury?

Our Thoughts: Millie already owns this but hasn’t read it and Claire has been wanting to read this, so it works out well.

Bestseller: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Living with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in Portland, Maine, Lena Haloway is very much looking forward to being cured and living a safe, predictable life. She watched love destroy her mother and isn’t about to make the same mistake.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena meets enigmatic Alex, a boy from the “Wilds” who lives under the government’s radar. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?

Our Thoughts: This was the book we were least excited about but Millie has read some of her other books, so it’s not that we don’t like this book, we just don’t think it’s going to be our next favourite read.

Debut Novel: Lucy in the Sky by Paige Toon

Settling down for a 24-hour flight to Australia, Lucy finds a text message on her phone from a woman claiming to have slept with her boyfriend, James, four times in the past month. Trapped above the Pacific, she questions everything about their relationship, but when she finally calls him, James reassures her that it was only his friend playing a joke. James is gorgeous and successful and Lucy adores him, yet at her best friend Molly’s wedding in Sydney, she finds herself having doubts and is keeping an eye on Molly’s brother-in-law Nathan. Nathan is a happy-go-lucky surfer boy with no prospects, no place to live, and an almost-girlfriend in tow. Suddenly, Lucy finds herself caught between two distant continents and two very different men

Our Thoughts: This book excited us a lot when we opened it. Claire nearly read this as part of a book club and Millie puts Five Years From Now, also by Paige Toon, in god tier books.

Book Adapted into a Movie: Room by Emma Donoghue

To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world….

Told in the inventive, funny, and poignant voice of Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience—and a powerful story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible. To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it’s where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it’s not enough … not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son’s bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Our Thoughts: Claire loves this book and it’s been a while since she’s read it. Millie has read it (she’s rated it on GoodReads) but can’t remember anything other than the movie.
