Throne of Glass ~ Sarah. J. Maas

I hadn’t planned to read Throne of Glass, thinking it was one of those books that TikTok had overhyped. Then, I accidentally joined a book club thinking it was just a group chat and the first book we were reading was Throne of Glass, so I bit the bullet.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas is a fantasy book whose protagonist is an assassin. Celeana Sardothein is the most feared assassin in the kingdoms and after a year enslaved in mines, she is pulled out to be the champion of the crown prince of Adarlan. Celeana has to survive deadly tests against other champions in order to win her freedom.

This book really annoyed me. I genuinely didn’t think the writing was good and there were far too many of those young adult cliches that people don’t actually like. However, I enjoyed reading it and would’ve read it in one sitting if it wasn’t for the fact that I had commitments I couldn’t avoid.

I do think the plot is interesting and I want to carry on reading the series but am not sure how annoyed I would get. I have been assured that the books do get better, but for the moment, I think I’m going to make my way through my current TBR.

I liked the characters and whilst there were flaws with their writing (you could kinda tell that Maas was a little bit in love with all of them), they have potential.

I gave Throne of Glass, three and a half stars.
