You ~ Book vs Tv Show

You was Caroline Kepnes’ debut novel back in 2014. However, I didn’t get round to reading it until last year after picking it up at a bargain price in a local supermarket. It wasn’t until after finishing the book and absolutely loved it albeit a little creeped out also, that I found out it was being turned into a Netflix Original Series. I was beyond excited, to say the least. My early teenage self would have been jumping for joy considering that both Penn Badley and Shay Mitchell were confirmed to be in the Tv show. I was an avid watcher of both Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars when I was younger so was thrilled to see them in something new.

I went into watching the series a tad apprehensive because I loved the book so much and was worried that they would ruin the story. I pretty much binged the show in a couple of days and it soon became apparent early on that although most of the plot was pretty similar there were quite large parts that had been altered or completely added brand new. Now looking back I can completely see why they made the series the way they did, veering from the book in places. Aspects of the series almost justified Joe’s, the main character, actions and also made him more likeable. For example, his relationship with Paco his next door neighbours kid doesn’t exist in the book at all but I can see why it was added. To show a different side to Joe perhaps.

I’m glad to hear that Netflix has confirmed a Season 2, however, I’m a tad disappointed that apparently, they won’t be sticking to the plot of Kepnes’ sequel Hidden Bodies which is on my to-read list this year. Although it was slightly obvious that they are planning to continue to stray from the original story with the shocking ending of Season 1.

Have you read the book or seen the show? What did you think?
