Wicked Fox (Gumiho 1) ~ Kat Cho

Wicked Fox follows eighteen year old Gu Miyoung who is trying to keep her deepest secret under wraps. She is a Gumiho, a nine tailed fox who has to consume the energy of males in order to survive. Being half human as well she has a hard time killing and will only take the lives of those who have wronged. She tries to tell herself that this way she has a morbid sense of justice. Gu Miyoung and her mother are trying to keep a low profile in the city of Seoul however one day she breaks her mothers number one rule to never reveal herself to anyone. One night in order to save a boy from being killed by a goblin, Gu Miyoung shows her true self and loses her Gumiho soul. The two are immediately drawn to each other and as their tenuous romance thrives, Gu Miyoung is desperate to restore her fox bead before the next full moon. This enchanting read is inspired by Korean folklore whilst being set in a bustling fantasy world.

Having never delved into the Korean myth of Gumihos I was very much intrigued by this book from the off and for a debut novel Kat Cho builds such a great story and new world at the same time. All whilst bringing a culture that is not very mainstream into the limelight. I loved the odd intertwining chapters that gave us a little more background and the characters in which she created were so easy to read and love. The only thing that stopped me from rating the book any higher was that it definitely felt a tad on the long side, at times I felt some of the filler chapters could have been condensed without hindering the main story. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am excited to read the sequel. I gave Wicked Fox by Kat Cho a 4⭐️ rating.
