Two Can Keep A Secret~ Karen M. McManus

Thinking of how to write this review without giving away any spoilers is proving to be a lot harder than I thought.

A couple years previously, I bought One Of Us Lying, Karen M. McManus’ debut novel, as a bit of an impulse buy and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was taken away by how I couldn’t guess who was responsible. Every page I read changed my theories and I was wildly swinging between which one of the characters had committed the murder. So, when I heard that McManus was releasing a second book, I was extremely excited.

Two Can Keep a Secret is the story of a small town, Echo Ridge, where two homecoming queens have been murdered and the killer has returned. Twins Ellery and Ezra, niece and nephew to the first victim, move to Echo Ridge and find themselves in the centre of things when the murderer reappears.

Once again, I had no idea the outcome of each twist and turn and found myself needing to find the answers. The relationship between the characters is totally believable and warmly written. The two protagonists, Ellery and Malcolm could have been the typical YA protagonists but we’re real teenagers that have their flaws. The only problem I had with this novel and it is such a small thing, but Ellery is supposed to be someone who struggles to make friends and she didn’t come across like that to me.

Despite that, I really loved this book. I give it five stars (can I give a bonus star for the sprayed edges?). I can’t wait to see if McManus releases another that fits the murder mystery genre.
