The Wolf Den ~ Elodie Harper

The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper is set in ancient Pompeii. Amara was the daughter of a Greek doctor until her mother sold her into slavery. Now, Amra works for Pompeii’s infamous brothel, owned by a man she despises. Amara is clever, quick-witted and ambitious, but she has to keep it hidden because a she-wolf’s value is only in the money she can make her pimp. But, Amara is determined to take every opportunity the streets of Pompeii may give her.

I am a bit of a fan of books set in Ancient Greece, so one set in ancient Pompeii seemed like a no brainer. I’m fortunate enough to say that I have visited Pompeii and so it was interesting to read about the streets I have walked and imagined and to see how Elodie Harper explained some of the graffiti that still exists.

The Wolf Den has a bit of a slow start and it took me a little while to get into. It didn’t help that I read in the evenings and I started reading this book when my evenings weren’t quite as available as usual and so, I did procrastinate a little bit by reading Heartstopper.

Once, I got past that initial slowness, I found myself getting through this book quite quickly. I was intrigued by the relationships between Amara and the other she-wolves. Her loyalty to Dido, her disdain for some of the others that evolved to respect and her hatred of Felix, her pimp, that fluctuated the more she knew about him.

I really enjoyed this book, I love historical fiction set in ancient times. It was an emotional rollercoaster that had so many highs and lows. I gave it four and a half stars.
