Should Have Book Tag

This book tag was created quite a while ago by Emmabooks, but we thought we’d give it a go…

Should Have:

Never Gotten a Sequel

C: The Maze Runner series by James Dashner. I know that if this didn’t have a sequel I would have probably wanted one but they just declined in quality and I think I would’ve been happier with just the first one ending with them escaping the maze.

M: The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Controversially, this book was so underwhelming after hearing such good things about the series. I disliked the first instalment so much that I haven’t gone anywhere near the rest of the series.

Had a Spin-Off Series

C: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I know there’s a sequel coming out soon which I am intrigued about, but I would love to read a spin-off about the creation of the oasis and it’s first few years. I think it would be interesting to read more about James Halliday and Ogden Morrow.

M: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I know that we got a very well rounded trilogy when it came to The Hunger Games but there were just certain aspects of the world created that I would have loved to know more about, such as The Capitol. To see a perspective of the games from someone on the inside and their way of life I would have found really intriguing.

Ended Differently

C: S.T.A.G.S. by M.A.Bennett. I thought this was a fun book to read until the last third which in my opinion ruined everything that had been built by being super predictable. I was disappointed as it felt like Bennett had given up.

M: The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave was a brilliant read which I thoroughly enjoyed however I was left wanting so much more by the ending. Although it definitely rounded the book up as a whole I had so many more questions. I wanted to know more about the girls’ lives afterwards.

Had a TV Show/ Film Franchise

C: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I just want to see that circus and that magic and that Victorian world. It’s more for the gorgeous imagery than the story but that would also be really good on screen.

M: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, I think would be fantastic as a series. Each episode detailing a different stage of Hugo’s life. Having been through so much trial and tribulation in her life I think it would be a riveting watch.

Had One Point of View

C: Burn by Patrick Ness. I probably would’ve enjoyed this book if there were fewer narratives. There were just too many voices and different story arcs happening at the same time that it just got a bit muddled in my head.

M: Having just finished The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and absolutely loving it, I will say the multiple different narratives is quite hard to get your head around at first. But the way Morgenstern weaves all these stories together is amazing but just hard to keep track of at times.

Had a Cover Change

C: The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. I think the colours of these covers are very pretty, however, it doesn’t feel like it quite fits with the story. I also think they seem a little outdated.

Stopped Reading

C: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I really struggled reading this the first time it was a heavy read and I hated how the women were treated. I then read it again a few years later and disliked it just as much, but still tried to continue.

M: Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson is honestly one of the worst books I have ever read. If it wasn’t for the fact that I was reading this for A-Level English Literature I would have definitely given up after the first few chapters.

Kept the Cover

C: The Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz. I’m not saying I don’t like the new covers, but they are my least favourite of the three different covers I have seen. I like the spines though. It may just be sentimentality talking, but I really liked the original metallic covers and still associate those colours with the novels. I would even be okay with them keeping the second set of covers, the black ones with the coloured symbols.

M: The Mickey Bolitar Series by Harlan Coben. This isn’t a case of that I like one cover more than the other, I think in their own way each does a good job of representing the books. What I find annoying is that every book in the series that I own has an entirely different cover, none of them matching the previous one. I would have just loved for all the spines to look the same, now that I have the full trilogy.

Not Pre-Judged

C: More a genre but classic literature. I constantly judge the classics as something I’m not gonna be interested in but I’ve enjoyed most that I’ve read.

M: If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio I definitely pre-judged but mainly because of how much I struggled with Shakespeare and the language at school. However, this book is fantastic, putting such a modern spin on the archaic language.
