Normal People ~ Sally Rooney

Normal People by Sally Rooney has been on my tbr list pretty much since it was released. Then when the BBC made an adaptation of it this year I was even more intrigued. But I am definitely the type of person who always wants to read the book first before watching a film or series adaptation.

This was also my first audiobook of the year. I have never been a huge fan of listening to a book as I always fear that I won’t fully take the story in as I get distracted rather easily. But to say I enjoyed this audiobook experience would be an understatement. Normal People was narrated by Aoife McMahon who had such an easy voice to listen to, which I think made the listen even more enjoyable.

Normal People follows Marianne and Connell growing up in the same town in rural Ireland. Unfortunately, that is where the similarities end. These two live in very different worlds but cannot deny the growing connection between them. We see their relationship grow through school and College. The issues that push them apart but ultimately they are drawn back together.

I couldn’t help but listen in awe as these two characters grew in unthinkable ways. Both Marianne and Connell face their own challenges throughout the span of the book that change them for the better and makes their relationship stronger.

At first this seems like your average love story but it is honestly so much more. Rooney creates an intricate story that delves in the subtleties of class, that electric feeling of first love and how family life isn’t always as it seems.

Overall, I gave Normal People by Sally Rooney a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star rating and I now look forward to watching the series adaptation.
