My Sister, The Serial Killer ~ Oyinkan Braithwaite

My Sister, The Serial Killer is one of those books that has sat, collecting dust, on my shelf since I purchased it. After hitting yet another reading slump I decided that it was probably time I pick it up and see what all the hype was about. Having read many very positive reviews and being intrigued by the blurb itself I was eager to start reading.

This 226 page book sure packs a punch for its small size. We follow sisters Korede and Ayoola who live in Nigeria. Korede, the narrator, is a nurse in the city and starts the book after her sister’s third boyfriend ends up dead. Claiming ‘self-defense’ every time Ayoola calls upon her sister to help with the disposal and clean up. Until now Korede has kept her word worrying in silence. But Ayoola has taken it too far when she starts dating the doctor Korede has been smitten with for some time. Worried that he will be her next ‘victim’ Korede has to decide who to save when she knows saving one will mean sacrificing the other.

I read this fairly quickly over the course of a few days constantly wanting to know more each time I put the book down. I loved how the relationship between the two sisters is portrayed and the way they interact with their mother. It showed a very raw side to family life especially under such weird circumstances. The book is very heavily focused on the sisterly relationship and although this wasn’t a negative I do wish that a bit more focus was put on the murders or even the odd bit of perspective from Ayoola. Like I said this didn’t take anything from the overall story being told but the true crime fanatic in me was just a tad disappointed.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was definitely my cup of tea; it just wasn’t 100% what I was expecting. I gave My Sister, The Serial Killer a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star review.
