Book Reader Problems Tag

While looking for something to do this week we stumbled across this tag on Adventures Of A Bookish Girl.

You have 20,000 books in your TBR. How do you decide what to read next?

C: I try to mix up what I’ve read, so if I’ve just read high fantasy, I’ll probably not read another next.

M: I always try not to read too many of the same genres in a row because that’s when I tend to hit a reading slump. So, I will always try and pick something that is polar opposite from what I’ve been reading.

You’re halfway through a book and just not loving it – do you put it down or are you committed?

C: There are very few books I’ve not been able to finish. I tend to power through, or if I really am struggling, I tell myself that I am not going to move onto something I really want to read until I finish that one book.

M: Most of the time I will power through as I always get a small sense of failure when I’m not able to finish a book. However, if I am really struggling sometimes I read something I know I’ll enjoy in between and then go back to finish the hard read.

The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge. Do you try to catch up? And if so, how?

C: I dedicate more time to reading and read shorter, easier to read books. I have read a few picture books just to try and catch up.

M: I always try to power through but there have been a few years where I just haven’t been able to finish our annual challenges. I normally find that I tend to slack in the middle of the year so now I know to push through and read more then to get ahead of the game.

The covers of a series you love do not match. How do you cope?

C: This doesn’t bother me. I do try to buy the same covers, but some of my favourite series have been out for long enough that their covers have changed a couple of times between the first book and the most recent.

M: Deep down this does really annoy the OCD in me but it’s usually due to the fact that a type of cover has been discontinued so I’ve had to buy the next books in the series with the new covers.

Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?

C: Millie.

M: Claire

You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?

C: I’m not much of a crier, so this is very unlikely to happen, but probably put the book down and look at something a lot more cheerful on my phone.

M: Only a select few reads have actually brought me to tears, but I would probably put the book down and finish the book in private.

The sequel to a book you loved just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

C: Generally, I do this anyway if it’s been a while between releases.

M: Most of the time I will reread the previous book(s) as I like to have all the details fresh in my mind. I hate reading a sequel where I keep having to check what happened in the previous book.

You do not want anyone to borrow your books. How do you politely say no when someone asks?

C: Normally, I’m the one to offer to let people borrow my books, so very few people ask. If they’ve asked, I give a reason why. For example; my copy of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is practically falling apart.

M: I’m not overly bothered about sharing my books with others. But do get a little annoyed when they come back in bad shape. For example, when my parents borrow books to take on holiday and they get them wet by the pool.

You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

C: Reading something quick and easy that takes little brainpower is how I usually get over a reading slump. It can be anything from a book I know back to front or something short.

M: Usually, I will try and persevere with the one that I’m the furthest into or am liking the most and put the rest back. When I next pick any of those discarded ones up again I will always start from the beginning.

There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

C: I tend to wait until everything is out in paperback and then I choose whichever is the cheapest combination of the books that I am most likely to love.

M: Most of the time it depends on how expensive they are. Also, I tend to wait until books come out in paperback because that’s just what I prefer.

After you purchase all of these books you’re dying to read, how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

C: It depends, sometimes books don’t even make it to my shelf before I start to read them, others can sit on the shelf for years.

M: Ultimately, I think it depends on how desperate I am to read a certain book. But, honestly, I definitely have some books on my shelf that have sat there untouched for years.
