The Addams Family ~ Calliope Glass

We all know that The Addamses are not your average family. After their wedding ceremony went horribly wrong Gomez and Morticia Addams move across the country to New Jersey where they set up home in an abandoned asylum previously used for the criminally insane. Thirteen years later, they’re still living their wonderfully gloomy life and this is where we our story picks up. In their big mansion on top of a hill in the quaint town of Eastfield you will find what The Addamses call home but to Margaux Needler, annoying reality tv host, it is the biggest eyesore in her plan to renovate the whole town for her new show. Margaux will stop at nothing until she destroys this unruly family, but The Addamses are more concerned about gathering their nearest and weirdest for a major family get together. Will Margaux succeed in her bid to destroy them? Or will The Addams Family continue to live their crazy kooky life?

I have always been an avid fan of anything to do with The Addams Family. From the original movie to the tv show to the musical I have seen them all. I have even dressed up as Wednesday Addams for Halloween on more than one occasion. So when I saw that they were bringing out a new animated movie about my favourite kooky family I was more than just a little excited. As I am writing this the new film hasn’t currently been released yet in the UK but will be at the end of the week. However, when in my local WHSmiths recently I saw they had the book of the story for the upcoming film. Of course I had to buy it! Even more so that it had been reduced to only three pound. Only a little worried that by reading it first I would ruin the movie I stormed straight ahead and read it in one sitting. To be honest with you it has just made me more excited to see the film when it comes out on Friday.

I don’t want to write too much about the plot as I wouldn’t want to ruin the film for anyone who wants to see it so I’ll try and keep this review short and sweet. I love the new twist on such a well known story/family and the fact that we could see some of the family members in a different light and forced into new situations. My favourite part of the plot would have to be Wednesday going to junior high and having the worries of a normal teananger. Shocking her mum Morticia when she decides she wants to wear ‘normal’ girl clothes. However, I was a little disappointed by the fact that it just felt like the writers were scared for this story to purely epitomise what The Addams Family is known for. The weird, crazy, kooky, macabre stuff they get up to and the comical side this has. They obviously felt they needed to bring in this power hungry female tv-host, maybe, the appeal to a very different audience to that of decades ago when these characters were originally made. It just felt like we had seen the character of Margaux a million times before.

Ultimately, I know this is a film/book aimed at children and maybe I’m just looking into it a bit too much but I put the book down a tad downhearted by the storyline. However, it hasn’t put me off seeing the film but I felt I could only give this read 2 ⭐️s.
